Messy Face

 Have a good day!

Thank you Linda, for the bib. ;)

I. Love. This. Dog.

Abby watching Phyllis come in to the world

I was taking a walk, pushing the stroller out to the pasture to take some photos of the growing lambs.  This is what we happened upon… Bernadette had just finished lambing and Phyllis entered the world.  Abby had taken her responsibility very seriously and watched and waited about ten feet away.  She would lay down and carefully look away from the bonding ewe and lamb, so as not to make them worry.  As I took pictures and then moved on, Abby remained.

Then I heard a deep bark and turned to see one of our horses approaching with too much curiosity so I came running back over.  Abby then realized that I agreed with her and that the intruder must be escorted away, suddenly she came alive and jumped up barking ferociously!  She completely deterred the horse and I praised her up!  What a good girl!

I am so impressed… I know I am always saying that and suddenly this blog is turning into a brag spot for my LGD, Abigail.  But she deserves it.

Cordelia’s ‘08 Lilac Ram Lamb

This little guy is our new lilac ram lamb born to an almost all black ewe, Cordelia.  Who would have thought that a ewe so dark could have a lilac son!?  I know, we’re blessed. ;)

Charlie’s Angels

As promised, pictures of “Charlie’s Angels,” my mother in law’s lambs.  They’re sired by our ram Kenleigh’s Douglas aka Dudley (the one who throws blue eyed babies).

Grace & Mercy

Grace is the little black and white ewe lamb and her sister, the lilac, is Mercy.  Normally Charlie’s pet ewe has boys and thus, they’re always butchered.  My hubby and I always feel bad when that time comes around for them as she’s always so sad.  We don’t know why she always has ram lambs but finally she got her ewe lambs.  I’m pretty sure she feels blessed.

Grace

Charlie is quick to report that she’s been hauling the lambs around by a halter so that she can take them for walks later on in life.  That’s fun for me to see and I’m glad that she is having so much fun with them.

Mercy

Thank God for little girls.

Mud Ranch Dudes

Kenleigh's Douglas

He wouldn’t get up for the picture

Kenleigh’s Douglas aka Dudley; a black and white ram with blue eyes.  He’s a bit strange, just like his horns, but he throws nice babies and has a nitch with a few of our ewes.  I am keeping as many blue eyed ewe lambs that I get from him so that I can breed them to Dub, our lilac ram below.  Dudley has been kicked by one of our horses (he deserved it) and has not been the same since.  He’s a bit strange in his thinking and also a bit slow.  He still likes to think he’s a horse, except when it is breeding time then he knows his job.  We’re happy to have him, he makes beautiful babies and that is what counts.

Kenleigh’s Debonaire aka Dub, a lilac ram born in ’07.  He’s been our top producer this year and given us some beauties.  His coloring is more unusual for the Jacob sheep so he’s been a bit popular.  He’s also the owner of a very nice set of horns and has a nice frame as well.  He’s a nice ram, a bit skittish but that’s the way we like our rams.  Nothing like a friendly one to show you the door.  We’ve bred him to Dudley’s girls this past fall and they’ve both put together some nice genes.  We’re happy with our produce thus far.  Thanks to Shannon & Tony at Kenleigh Acres for such nice boys.

Dub

And why “Dub” you ask?  Ever seen these cars?  They’re pretty goofy if you ask me, lowered, chopped, with fancy wheels on them.  Well, with a name like Debonaire, I was going to call him Debbie but Shannon made me feel bad for him so while I was at the Long Beach Grand Prix a few years ago I saw a booth by DUB with these supped up cars.  All the guys working the booth were pretty macho, gold chains, funny clothes and well I thought that our Dub looked lowered to the ground, he had fancy horns, and a fancy paint job so it just fit.

Looking Forward to Spring

Over at Midwest Horse, Steve hijacked Callie’s blog and decided to do a non-meme or non-tag and asked that any of us list 10 things that we are looking forward to spring for.  Here are mine:

1. Lambs, lots of them.  They warm the heart, bring a smile to your face, and joy to your life.  Nothing like seeing them bounce around the pasture.

2. Sun.  I miss the sun shiney days, 70 degree weather, and being able to go out without mud getting caked in my boots and shoes.

3. Horses in summer coats.  They just gleam, are gorgeous, happy, and they don’t leave horse hair up your nose and on your clothes.

4. Green grass.  I love it when our pastures are green and abundant with grass.

Levi

5. No more feeding the livestock.  See #4.

Our Flock

6. Swimming is in the near future!  I love to swim and wasn’t able to all last year because of being pregnant with our dear daughter.  I was too dialated once the water was warm enough in the lakes, then I was post partum and not allowed to swim for six weeks… By that time, the lakes were too cold.

Levi & Ollie

7. Leaves on the trees.  We have gorgeous oak trees around our house and it is always exciting to see them start to pop.

8. Flowers.  I love flowers, and spring always brings them along.  Too bad I, for some reason, am bad at growing them here.  I think my oak trees don’t like them.

Wild Mule's Ear

9. Flip flops.  I love my flip flops.

10. Long days.

11. Fishing.  I love to fish and my hubby and I head out to the lake after work because of, see #10.

Hubby & Trout

What are your 10 reasons to look forward to spring?

Animal Owning, Land Owning, Small Town Rant

Ever felt like you had a kick me sign on your back?  I’ll tell you, the joys of living in a small town used to be very numerous.  You know that “everyone is friendly here, we wave at everyone who drives by, and things are hunky-dorey” thing that people talk about?  That’s how my town used to be.  Everyone knew everybody, you waved at every car because you knew who it was.  People helped out people in need, they watched each other’s backs and appreciated the diversity that came with living in a small town.  My town was always poor, we live in a county that is poorest in the state, but it is gorgeous here among the mountains and that has attracted people.  Granted, our population hasn’t severely swelled, though our property values have.  We’ve attracted people from the “bay area” of California and southern California, in the big cities.  They wanted to move here to escape the city life style, the hustle and bustle, the traffic lights, sidewalks, paved everything, and exchanged it for fresh air, green grass, trees, land, water, and peacefulness.

I’m on a rant because of those people.  Now, not all people from the city are bad, I realize that.  I also know that not everyone who moves here likes to cause trouble.  But it angers me to no end when people move here to retire and enjoy the country only to end up wanting to change the way things are run in the town, how people live, and what you do with your property!  It’s almost as if they have nothing better to do with their spare time than look for things to nit-pick.  It drives me up a wall!

I grew up in this town, I was born in the Big City an hour from here.  I lived on the same piece of property my whole life until I got married and moved three miles down the road to this place my husband and I have now.  I knew how this town was, how friendly and lovely it was.  People were like family.  Now, people are untrustworthy, ungrateful, backstabbing, underhanded, and anything else I can think of that is down right bad.

Our property borders the main road into town, we almost live in a fish bowl except you can’t see our house from the main road.  You can, however, drive on a private road that guts our property to some houses in the back of us.  We do live in a private fish bowl.  When we get another animal, everyone knows.  When we want to build a pond, everyone knows.  When we want to build a barn, everyone knows.  And did you also know that we have the third best property in town?  Yep, everyone knows and to some it is threatening and irritating.  And no, my husband and I are not retired, won’t be for another thirty years plus, thus we have to work for our money in which to improve our property.  We do not have a little income that just pours in from other sources in which we can fund our barns, pastures, animals, fencing, landscaping, etc.  So there are things that are prioritized and set aside until we can deal with them later… such as landscaping.  Now, we do water our grass and it is lush and beautiful… but beauty is in the eye of the beholder eh?

We have some people in town who like to tell everyone else what to do.  If they lived in a city, they would live in one of those neighborhoods where your house color was decided for you.  Eck!  No thanks, and move back to where you came from please.

For example, we are trying to build a pond.  Yes, we have an abundance of water and we can harness it to irrigate and make our pastures gorgeous year round but we can only take it one step at a time.  So, what happened?  Someone called the Army Corp of Engineers on us to complain that we were building a pond in “wet lands” (by the way, we’re okay on our pond).  The same week we got a letter from the Resources Conservation District wanting to help us with our water, drainage, irrigation, and noxious weeds (that grown in ‘wet lands’).  Now we have someone complaining about some industrial mining equipment that was going to be stored on our property (in the back, off the main road — can’t see it from the road) until the owner could buy his own place to keep it (had to move it off of land he is selling).  Oh boy!  You can’t store things like that on your property!  Oh my goodness!  How dare us!

I’m just so sick of people sticking their noses in other people’s business.  I am tired of people moving here to the country and then try to regulate the way people live.  No, our place is not ugly but it sure isn’t fenced with white vinyl fencing (what a dream that would be!).  We can only afford so much at each time and vinyl fencing isn’t that high on the priority list.

So do me a favor, when and if you retire, please do not move to a quaint little town out in the middle of no where and then get bored in five years only to want to change the place you moved to because it was quiet and peaceful.  Leave the people be and stay where you are in your town house if you want to do that sort of thing.

Rant over, thanks for listening.

Signed, your friendly neighbor. ;)

All About Results

Violet

I’m just all about results here, even though it may be a day late… I just like to keep you in suspense.  Or, maybe it was just that I was so busy yesterday I couldn’t even get on here to tell you my decision!  But, here goes… The naming of the blue eyed beauties.

Here is the list that I received, and I must say I am very grateful and you obviously all had your thinking caps on.  I love every one of the names and am planning on keeping them for future use!  Okay, lets get on with it:

Sybil, Ella*, Charlotte, Violet, Elizabeth, Taylor, Skye, Azure, Lavender, Esther*, Emily, Luna, Beatrix, Laurencia, Rosalind, Cordelia, Lavinia, Elizabella, Esmeralda, Isabelle, Eleanor, Alice, Celia, Rose, Clare, Juliana, Camillia.

If the name has a * that means there was two that suggested that particular name.  But now I have to explain why I picked what I picked…

Sybil is a beautiful name and was a runner up for me.  Charlotte, while being a beautiful name and very attractive to me, I cannot use.  It is my mother in law’s name, aka “Charlie.”  I’m not too sure she’d be happy about me using her name although we did have a steer named Chuck whom we have been consuming and is also in our freezer.  Though, to me, Chuck is not exactly Charlotte.

Violet is a gorgeous name and very dear to me… I love Violet.  She’s my favorite ewe, born last year.  She gave us a very cute ram lamb this year.  See her photo above.

Lavender was a good contender but I think I’d like to name a sister of Violet’s, Lavender.  It fits so well… hopefully Sophia will have more ewe lambs next year.  I’ll save that as I am a true lavender lover.

Skye and Azure made a whole lot of sense, I love those names.  I knew a horse named Azure once, she had a dark blue eye though wasn’t blinde.  I almost bought her but she was nabbed before I could decide for sure if I wanted her.

Cordelia is a wonderful old fashioned name.  I always get a kick out of “Anne of Green Gables” when she wants to be called Cordelia instead of Anne.  And in honor of her, I named a ewe from last year Cordelia.  She just had her first baby yesterday, a lilac ram (photos to come!).

All the rest are wonderful old fashioned names.  I love them, ever single one.  But what really nailed it on the head for me was Ella and Elizabeth.  I like the idea of naming a lamb after Ella Fitzgerald, the singer whose song I completely butcher every time I sing it.  And no, Ella didn’t have blue eyes but I really like that song.  It is fun to sing and Blue Eyes Smiling at Me, it fits well around here.  Elizabeth is after, yep, Elizabeth Taylor.  What a good idea!  I just saw “The Taming of the Shrew” with Elizabeth Taylor as the main character.  She does have stunning beauty and her eyes are amazing.  How does one get lavender colored eyes anyway?  They’re incredible and I thought that our little babies with their incredible eyes would fit well.

Impressive!

Stella & Lou Ellen

Stella & Lou Ellen, twins from last year

I am impressed by all the wonderful feedback I’ve had on my blue eyed beauties!  Thank you all so much for the name suggestions.  I am going to narrow it down and announce their names hopefully tomorrow.  I’ve also got some pictures of our “dudes” who create these gorgeous kids.  But, for now I wanted to answer a couple of questions that you’ve asked and maybe I can give some insight.

As far as the lilac coloring, I’m not sure how it works.  I don’t believe it is like the grulla coloring in horses where the dun gene actually makes a black horse diluted to the mousey gray coloring.  It would be interesting to see how the lilac color works though and hopefully some of our more expert jacob sheep people can lend their knowledge on the subject.  I do know that there are different shades but am not sure why or how they become that color.

The other question is if the sheep have twins of the same sex.  No, they don’t we are just blessed enough to have a lot of ewe lambs this year (although we’re getting a bit worried that there won’t be enough to butcher as we like to keep ewes for breeding if they’re of quality).  For example, Bernie and Jonquil are twins and we have Rudy and Trudy who are twins.  We have many many pairs who are not of the same sex, probably just like twins in humans.  You never know what you’re going to get, although twins in sheep are very common.  We’re wondering if we’re going to get triplets someday as our ram, Debonaire, is a triplet with two ewe lambs.

Anyway, thank you all again and I will announce names tomorrow!

Happy Saint Patty’s Day!

Blue Eyes Smiling at Me

Bea's 08 Twins

Okay, so maybe it’s blue skies but I’m not too sure how the lyrics of that song go.  My baby doesn’t mind, she likes it how ever I sing it to her.  But that’s not the reason of my post.  I am talking about blue EYES smiling at me!  For example:

Bea's Baby 08

This little tyke was born on the eleventh, and is one in two ewes born to Mud Ranch’s Beatrice (her friends call her Bea) and to Kenleigh’s Douglas or “Dudley.”  Dudley had a date with Bea this past fall and besides my mother in law’s pet ewe, Phoebe, that’s all the dates Dudley had!  But, he produce two gorgeous ewe lambs for me and two for my ma-in-law, Charlie.  Charlie is proud of her girls, Grace & Mercy, Mercy being a very sought after lilac but of course, Charlie will be keeping her girls so they’re not up for grabs.  I am extremely happy that Dudley has produce blue eyed babes for me in these two new girls.  We’ll probably be retaining them as I’d like to breed them to Debonaire and I hope to get blue eyed lilacs, if that’s at all possible.  That’s what is on the fore front of my mind though, and hopefully it’ll come true.  We’ll find out next year!

I’ll have to go over to the “studly hang out” otherwise known as my parent’s house where the boys are and take some photos for you.  Debonaire and Dudley are enjoying eachother’s company and are, I’m sure, dreaming of fall when they’ll once again be matched with some beautiful ewes to create more beautiful lambs like these two new girls.

If you can think of some names for these blue eyed beauties, (we prefer more old fashioned, exotic, or elegant) please leave me a comment!  I’d love to hear your suggestions.

Mi Amiga y Mestenos

web-dsc_0064.jpg

Okay, so I’ve been under the Mexican influence the past few days.  My husband has some customers visiting and learning at our shop, one being from Monterrey, Mexico and one from Mexico City.  I’ve been practicing my spanish and they’ve been practicing their ingles… err… english.  But that’s not what I wanted to talk about.  I wanted to introduce everyone to mi amiga, Dixie, and her mestenos or mustangs.  She’s down there on the left in my blogroll and she has started a blog about her mustangs that she trains.  Her newest accomplishment is being accepted as one of the competitors for the Western States version of the Extreme Mustang Makeover.  She’ll be competing with about 35 other contestants in June.

Dixie’s newest mustang is a three year old mare from the Fox Hog herd management area here in Northern California.  She has the typical thoroughbred / draft cross looks from that particular herd but has such a sweet disposition.  She truly is incredible and I am amazed how Dixie always either lucks out or is blessed enough to get mustangs like “Bertie.”  Her mustang “Otter” whom she brought home from the Extreme Mustang Makeover last September, which was held in Texas, has the same laid back personality.  She also has a beautiful little palomino filly who is the same… How does Dixie do it?!  I am not really sure, but she is a lucky lady and I am lucky enough to be able to photograph her undertakings.  The above picture is one I got from this past Tuesday, Bertie has already accepted the tarp.

So go stop by and root for Dixie at Dixie’s Mustangs.  And go root for Tracey too at Mustang Diaries, these girls need lots of encouragement and support.  They’re doing a wonderful thing for our national treasures, the mustang.

Favorites Wednesday

web-dsc_0004-miller.jpg

I was at a Jerry Tindell clinic with my mare, Annie Oakley, in October ’06 and this guy was the ranch dog.  What a neat guy… His name is “Miller” because he was found in a Miller beer box on the side of the road.  Lucky for him the owner’s found him… Lucky for the owners for finding him.

My Personal Body Guard

Web-DSC_0084-Abby, originally uploaded by MudRanch.

She may have a sweet face, but our little canine friend, Abby, has a streak in her that won’t allow for surprises. This morning she was sleeping around the back of the house that faces the pasture, enjoying the morning sun. I went out the front of the house, toward the truck and noticed our neighbor’s black lab, Sadie, was out for a stroll and a visit. While our houses aren’t near by, Sadie has grown accustomed to wandering around our little neighborhood and down our private dirt roads. None of us have ever minded and in fact, we’re all known to give her treats and then she moves on to the next house for some more.

Well, Sadie surprised Abby today. I walked out and Sadie was about 100 feet away from me and I greeted her loud enough, though not on purpose, for Abby to hear it. As Abby rounded the corner she saw Sadie running at me in a friendly way to me, but must have been threatening to Abby. Abby quickly turned on her ferocious bark and came charging. She quickly broadsided Sadie and nipped her in the rear end. Sadie, taken-a-back, nipped for a second and then turned and high tailed it to our gate at the front of the drive. Abby was hot on her heals and escorted her out the gate… Abby stopping and Sadie continuing on home. Abby was so upset that she was barking at the gate and barked all the way back to the house and wouldn’t quit even after she checked me out to see if I was okay. Funny girl… and good girl. I know I have a protector when I need one, I just hope she does that for the sheep like she’s supposed to.

Graceful. Beautiful… Sometimes.

My husband was helping me take some pictures of our horses this past weekend.  His job was to take care of our baby while I shot, and sometimes he was to chase them around to get them moving.

Annie Oakley

The lighting gets funky, and then I get to play with it on my computer.  I learn a lot through trial and error on Photoshop CS3, I learn through books, and sometimes from the Pioneer Woman.  The above photo I adjusted by using her “Hard Light” fix.  It worked well, and brought the highlights through the mane.

Annie & Sunnie

Here’s my little shorty telling my gelding (used to be stallion) who’s boss.  She’s only 14.1 hands or so, but she believes she can do anything and normally she’s right.  I didn’t do much to fix that photo above, but did try the hard light thing again and just lowered the opacity of my layer.  It’s okay, but the thing I like most is Annie’s body language.

And then there’s the classic pose that Etta is demonstrating above.  It’s lovely, peaceful, looking off into the distance… everything a horse should be.

And sometimes you get a shot that no amount of tweaking will fix.

Are ya sure you don’t wanna ride my one eyed zombie horse?

Lamb Watch Update!

Hello everyone!  I’m back!  I am sorry I have been missing in action lately, life has been so busy and I’m just trying to play catch up.  Hopefully I’ll be around more often now, but you never know where life will lead.  I’m also trying to slim down my “online time” as it just takes up too much of my day!

But, on a good note, we’ve got an updated lamb page.  I went up and got some pictures of our babies yesterday.

Eunice & Francine

Hi!  We’re Eunice & Francine, we’ll be staying here at Mud Ranch because our mommy is getting up in age and our shepherdess wants to keep our kind around.

Eunice & Francine

Since we’re twins, we like to do everything together.

Mud Ranch's Cyan

Hi, I’m Cyan and my sister Violet is my shepherdess’s favorite ewe so my twin, Ruby, and I are staying too.  My shepherd is wanting to retain five ewes so my shepherdess is picking from her favorite ewe’s.  Smart lady!

Enjoy!
