Violet

Hi, my name is Violet.  I’m the favorite in this here pasture and just wanted to introduce myself.  You see, I hold a pretty high position in my flock and a position almost to royalty with my shepherdess because I am so sweet to her.

See, when no one else comes to the fence because they’re all too “scared,” I march right up and expect to be scratched.  I even let my shepherdess touch me all over my face and even scratch my chest and back.  I like her a lot.

In fact, I’m so tolerant I even accept kisses from my shepherdess’ kookie canine named Abby.

She’s just a large over-grown puppy who doesn’t know how to control her feet and body too well yet.  The gal is just too big for her brain right now, though I admit, I am very happy to see her when she’s out patrolling the pasture.  I know the coyotes will stay away.  My shepherdess made a smart move when she bought this Abby, don’t tell her I said that of course.

My shepherdess has been having a hard time lately, and so I thought I’d take the reins for a bit and show you around since you haven’t seen the flock in a while.  Come along…

This here is part of the flock.  My shepherdess knows everyone’s names and can call us out in a picture like this, no problem.  But since she’s not here, and since I’m related, I’ll pass the info along.

Down in front, Sophia (my mother, she’s the matriarc of the place and will fight anyone off the grain… except for me).  Then there’s my little sisters to the upper left and right, Cyan & Ruby.  In the middle of them is Bea, to the right is Little Madge and then Ella.  On the left and just above Cyan, is Packard.  Above Packard is his mama Cordelia (the black one) and behind her is Nash.  In the middle of them is Freckles and to the right of Freckles is Lily (she was born on Easter a couple of years ago I hear) and her daughter Constance.  Above and to the left a little is Fanny Mae and Meat Head, to the left of them is Rudy, and to the left of Rudy is Celeste.  Oh, trust me there’s much more than that, I was just getting started but didn’t want to make you dizzy.

My mama Sophia.  I think she’s beautiful and so does my shepherdess.  In fact, my shepherdess was so sad when my mama gave birth to two rams the first year she owned her and wanted a ewe lamb to keep so bad.  Well, the next year I was born with my brother and guess who was all excited.  Yep, my shepherdess, and I got to stay around here.  This year my mama had my two sisters, Ruby & Cyan, and she’s pretty happy about them too but still thinks I’m best.

This is Little Madge with my two little sisters just behind her.  They all get along great, and I’m happy because then they don’t bug me too much.  Little Madge got her name from her great-grandma who was killed last fall by coyotes.  My shepherdess was mortified when Madge got killed, it nearly broke her heart because great-grandma Madge was almost as sweet as me.  And you know what?  She even had a Bostonian accent when she baaaa’ed.  I never knew where Boston is but my shepherdess always got a laugh when great-grandma Madge would baaaa.

This here is Tiffany, her mama’s name is Stephanie because she’s the whitest ewe in the flock.  My shepherdess had to think of a name for her mama because she was so “blonde” and thought Stephanie was a good fit.  So, to go along with the fancy names, she named her daughter Tiffany.  We all think it fits, and she’s a fun little lamb.  Oh, and yeah, she’s a late bloomer born in June.  Go figure.

This dude is Packard, he’s pretty high in the rankings I hear because of his supposed good looks.  I don’t know, my shepherdess thinks he pretty hot but I’m not too keen on him.  She’s always ooh’ing and ahh’ing about his horns and coloring.  Whatever.

This dude is Nash.  My shepherdess likes him too because he’s a lilac and has nice strong horns.  I think he’s a bit of a baby though, don’t tell, but he still drinks milk!  Ha ha ha!

Anyway it was nice to talk to y’all but I’d better get going.  I think I see some grass that needs to be mowed and some shade that needs to be sat in.  See ya around!

Well it’s been quite a week for me.  It all started with a severe kidney infection last Thursday the 24th and I wallowed in pain all day and finally went to the Doc where they put me on an I.V. with heavy antibiotics and knocked me out so I could rest.  I hate that feeling, of not being in control of myself.  Since then I’ve had a horrible time keeping any food down and my smart hubby put me on a clear liquid diet which has helped.  I’ve lost a lot of weight which needed to happen, just not this way.  So my Doc thinks that there’s something wrong internally because the kidney infection came on so suddenly.  Now I go in for a CT scan tomorrow morning in the Big City.  I’m really not looking forward to that as I’m pretty clausterphobic.  Oh the joys… Anyway, off to take a nap.  Just wanted to let every one know why I’ve been absent.

And now for a lovely picture of my baby with her first birthday card sent by my Aunt Denise.  She loves it!  And she’s also still due for a birthday party… We were going to have one this past weekend but that quickly got cancelled.

Happy Happy Birthday Baby

My baby girl is one year old today.  I thought about waking her at 12:29 a.m. to remind her that that was the exact time she arrived but then decided not to.  Actually, I was sound asleep and would never do that unless I was feeling very ornery and she was atleast 16.

I was never what you consider a “baby” person.  I really didn’t ever desire to have children of my own and actually never desired to hold a baby if I saw one, even relatives.  I would look at them in their mama’s arms and think, “yep, it’s a baby.”

My mom always told me that it would be different when I had my own.  That they just grab on to you and don’t let go.  Your mother juices would kick in and you’d know what to do instantly, just like when you take care of a puppy, kitten, lamb, or foal.  I wasn’t too sure about that though.  I’d raised lots of baby animals and always felt that mothering instinct with them, just never felt it for a fat, bald, drooling, human baby.

Being pretty much a tomboy I also thought that God would give me a boy.  He had to.  He knew it was best too, afterall.

Yeah, he did know best.  My baby GIRL was never really fat, never bald a day in her life, never really drooled like I’ve seen babies drool, and yep, she’s a girl.

The first six months were like six years, these last six months have been like just a few days.  I cannot believe how this little person has weasled her way in to my heart and life and now really cannot imagine life without her.  When she was around a month old people would ask if I couldn’t imagine life without her and I thought, “Oh yeah, that wasn’t too long ago when I could run out for anything and go riding all day and do anything I wanted.”

I would still like to be able to go riding all day but don’t ache for it like I used to.  A child has a way of taking all your selfishness and throwing it out the window.  That is something I would highly recommend to those who might want a baby but are nervous of the freedom loss.  Yeah, you lose it but it is worth it in every way.  And when your baby hits about a year old, and there’s someone you can trust, you can always hire them to watch her for a few hours while you go riding or visit with friends.

I really wouldn’t trade this motherhood thing for anything in the world now that I’ve arrived.  I was stubborn, selfish, foolish, and thought I knew what I wanted.  Thank the good Lord above, He knew better.

Happy Birthday to My Baby, Annie.  Mama loves you all the way around the world and back again.

Retro Daisy & Kiger Gelding

Well, I’ve been playing in Photoshop again and seeing what I can do to tweak.  But here’s a couple of opposites just to show you how completely whacked balanced I can be.  The first is something that may make you sick if you’re kinda sensitive.

“Retro Daisy”

It reminded me of that old 70′s shag carpet and pea soup green appliances.  Eeeek!  But I kinda like what it did to the daisy.

But just so I don’t leave you with a queesy feeling in your stomach…

This handsome boy is a currently tamed, ex-wild Kiger gelding who lives about an hour from me.  He’s really handsome and has that to die for mane and forelock.

Until next time… Enjoy.

A Couple Favorite Websites

I have run into some of the greatest websites along my www travels so I thought I’d share a couple with you.  Both places are highly recommended by me, please visit!

Sunset Halters: I have ordered a few things from Karen at Sunset Halters a few times and each time her products are high quality, super friendly service, easily accomodates your wishes, fast, and very friendly.  I am currently in the process of ordering my second haltermore.  I love her tack!

Etsy:  What a marvelous find!  I actually opened shop there for Estrellita Photo and am listing some prints.  I’ve got a lot more to do but am hoping for some mild success.  Atleast enough to fuel my camera and horse tack obsession (okay, baby toys from Etsy would be great too!).  I absolutely love buying handmade goods where you know that love and time went into each item.  Definitely a big step up from ebay for things more personal, (how about these bonnets or these shoes, or these bags from South Africa?)

Enjoy!

Went Ridin’

Thank you to everyone who sent comments about the fires.  It is still a huge threat to those historical towns that are in it’s path.  They’ve been closing down the main highway that goes to the big city because they’re making a goal line stance there on the highway and actually back burning the hills.  We went to the Big City yesterday for church and almost didn’t make it home.  We had to rush and once we made it past the stopping point, we were safe but it was closed not too far behind us.  We did see fire up on the hills really close to the highway so the fire was slowly creeping its way toward us.  Thankfully there was no wind yesterday as that really helps the firefighters get a grasp on things and send the fire packing.  I’m not sure how well they did yesterday but know that today the highway is closed again from about 11:00 am to about 9:00 pm.

Yesterday, however, hubby and I went trail riding with some friends of ours.  We had a great time!

28+ year old Kahla, (the gray) with her buddy Joe (pinto) hiding in the bushes.

I was going to take my camera around my neck to get some trail shots but after I hoped on Sunnie in their round pen, he did a couple of crow hops and I decided that riding and taking my camera might be a bad idea.  I need to invent a riding helmet for cameras, that’d be a nice accessory.

Sunnie settled in just fine though and was doing really well in to the ride.  Hubby was riding Cali and she did pretty good too.  She was pretty fresh in the very beginning and wanted to trot so hubby had her ride right up on Sunnie and he did a good job stopping her.  Once we got on the gravel road, they both slowed down and followed behind our friends.

Here Cali is being rude and starting to walk while hubby holds her back.  Fly spray is a must right now.

We went up a pretty steep logging type road at the back of our friends house and wound our way up the side of the mountain.  This part is heavily in to the old burn so there’s lots of brush to plunge through.  Cali and Sunnie both did great, never missed a beat and never spooked.  My eyes started to sting because of all the smoke and it would have been nice to see the view, but hopefully we’ll go back and take pictures to share here.  Needless to say, it was a lot of fun and something I’ve needed to do for a while.  I love my kids, and Sunnie and Cali are gems.

Off to get the baby out of bed…

Prayers Needed

Well one of our fires has really gotten out of hand.  We’ve had quite a few here in the North State that have gotten out of hand but now there’s one that fairly close by that is raging.  The highway we take to get to the Big City is closed down and my favorite lake has fire coming right at it.  There is a really neat 1800′s town that is in mandatory evacuation, and another 1800′s town that could be in danger.

This is when I wish they wouldn’t have dinked around with the fires when they first started and just snuffed them then.  I do believe that a “healthy fire” is great, but when it is in the middle of July, there is only disaster waiting to happen.  Actually it infuriates me that roads have been closed, logging stopped (mind you, I do not believe in clear cuts, but selective logging), and other enviornmentally dangerous (that’s right, environmentally dangerous, you heard it here first) things have been done around here by the government, namely US Forest Service and BLM.  They’re on my list, both entities.  It is amazing how those entities are no longer managing the forests and public lands but actually locking the public out of them and letting the brush grow without reduction and therefore leading to ladder fuels that let the fires burn in the crown of the trees where it gets out of hand.  Yes, I’ve been there done that.  Did you know that my town actually had a out of control “control burn” back in ’99 when the BLM thought it might be a good idea to continue with a scheduled burn to get rid of a noxious weed on July 2nd on a windy day!  Oh yea, my town lost 23 houses and thank God that no one was killed as the fire was very fast moving and utterly devastating.  What do we have now?  We have brush, and lots of it where the BLM has refused to come in and clean up their mess.  Yeah, you might say I have a bias opinion but really I believe they’ve become worthless.

Here’s a direct quote from the BLM’s website: The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) might best be described as a small agency with a big mission: To sustain the health, productivity, and diversity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations.

Interesting, then why the gates BLM?  Oh, and is a noxious weed (that grew back by the following summer of ’00) worth the lives of people, animals, and land?  Our mountains are still scarred.  Do they care?  I really don’t think so.  And yes, I’m on a rant but this has happened too many times.  I pick on the BLM and other government agencies because they seem to think that the land belongs to them and not us as the people.  They shut us out, stop the logging which shuts down roads in which we could use to fight the fires and also keeps them in complete power which is what they shouldn’t have.  They are here to serve the public, not step on us.

Signing off for now… miffed and upset by the fires.  My prayers and thoughts are with those that are being evacuated and all the history that is about to go up in flames.

Boys like Girls

Yep, that’s the name of our mystery men band.  Here’s a photo that I caught of them at our local Independence Day parade and I knew that they didn’t belong, they just had to be in some sort of band.  Especially when the girls started bouncing up and shaking their hands.

Here’s an older picture of them with the description below.  Thank you to Rachelle for finding out who these dudes are!  You have a year’s free access to my blog!  ;)

In your picture, Mr. Purple shirt is wearing sunglasses, the next guy has the blond/black hair, the guy in the middle is in the blue shirt and the last guy has shaved and picked up a set of headphones.  I sent your picture to a friend “in the business” and she got back to me right away and said it is them for sure!  She was unable to confirm what they were doing in ___________.  She said this is an old picture of them.

Some Answers, Finally!

I have had quite a few questions asked over the life of my very young blog and sometimes I have answered in the comments sections and sometimes they got overlooked (sorry!).  So now I am here to provide some answers to questions that have been neglected.  If you have any further questions, please leave them for me here and I’ll try and do another post sooner than later!

How do you like living in such a small town where you know just about everybody (except those dudes who look like they’re in a band, that is)?

I actually love it.  And now that our towns have gotten bigger, I’m not liking it as much.  I used to really know everyone, waved at every car and the traffic was much less through town.  Now there have been a lot of retirees moving here and of course our tourist impact has increased with the popularity of our river for fishing.  There is quite a bit more houses, developed land and gates that have increased with the population which has really cut off some great trails for riding.  I hold a bit of a grudge on that.  But, I still love it here regardless.  I am definitely not too thrilled with the state of California as a government though.

What kind of camera do you use? It takes such nice shots.

Thank you!  It is a Nikon D50 and I bought it in a kit from Costco two years back.  It came with the camera bag, memory card, neck strap, battery, battery charger, and two lenses; a shorter wide angle and a nice telephoto lens that I use most of the time.  I am now shopping for a new lens.

Are you a professional photographer? Just wondered ‘cuz you mention taking photos at a wedding next month.

Nope, definitely not.  I kind of have a hope in the back of my head that I’d like to sell some prints or become more of a “stock” photo photographer.  We’ll see.  But the wedding is for a friend who cannot afford a fancy photographer and so asked me… I said yes because I’m not getting paid and therefore won’t feel bad on my first wedding if it doesn’t come out as good as I hoped.  It’ll be good practice.

Does the MTG actually help stimulate (hair) growth, or does it stop the itchies so that hair can grow?

They actually claim that it stimulates growth.  Look for them here.

Is that handsome Zapata still a stallion? He’s really darling and I love that he has such a personality.

Zapata is a gelding now.  He is a handsome boy and I’m pretty proud to have produced him.  He is really similar to his sire who is my gelding, Sunnie.  They are a lot alike in personality and looks.  Zapata is also growing like crazy, reaching about 15 hands at just two years old.  That’s tall for a mustang!

Zapata as a yearling showing off… I always loved this photo even though it’s blurry.  Or, especially since it’s blurry.

I like the cow names, Jessica and Matlida….Debbie and Twinkie. How do you decide what to call them?

Twinkie and Mattilda came with their names.  They’re registerd Herefords.  Twinkie actually got her name (so I’m told) because of her excessive white.  Jessica is one I named.  She is named after “Jessica” on The Man from the Snowy River (a must see movie), as Jessica’s deceased mother’s name was “Mattilda” and was the woman that “Spur” and Jessica’s father fought over.  I also named Little Debbie and she was given the name because her dam’s name is Twinkie.  Little Debbie is a brand of pastry you can find at most gas stations, kind of like Hostess.

When you say you boost the “curves” of your photos in PS, what does that mean?

Curves is a tool in Photoshop programs and it bumps up your contrast and can brighten your over-all photo in a more natural way.  I usually like to bump my contrast up a bit in most my photos.

Joan, the colors in your photos are terrif–did you touch up or are the sooc??

While I would like to be sooo good that my photos are SOOC (straight out of camera), I have not achieved that status yet.  I still do a bit of contrast tweaking though I have also played with the settings in my camera itself to bump up the saturation, contrast and sharpness.  It’s fun to be able to tweak settings!  I do small edits in Photoshop most of the time and some larger edits less frequently.

What kind of dog is Abby? Is sheep care a natural instinct for her?

Abigail is Anatolian Shepherd and Great Pyrenees cross.  Her breeds have a long history of sheep guardianship and are experts at their jobs.  I love that Abby is a cross between the breeds because I believe I got the best of both worlds.  Abby’s hair coat is woolly in the winter and she sheds to a nice smooth coat in the summer.  She does not roam like the Pyrenees tends to do, is not as agressive as the pure Anatolians can be and is just a mild dog with a wonderful disposition and since she is a cross will be less prone to certain breed faults such as hip displaysia, cancer and the like.  I am a mutt lover.

Is that a Jersey cow you have there? (in the first picture lying down in the background)

Yup!  That’s Louise.  She belongs to a friend named Louie (actually he spells is Lewis) and thus she is Louie’s or “Louise.”  Get it? ;)   She’s a sweetie of a cow and just looking for a good home.   We just happen to be her foster parents as she would have no friends at her owner’s home and would be a bit more abandoned so to speak.  We love Louise.

Here she is in her winter woollies.  She’s blonder, fatter, and much more sleek now.

Nothing like watching dogs having a great time together ) What are your other 2 called.. ?

Levi a.k.a. Woots, Cutsie Wootsie, Black Bart (with a black heart), Levi Bob Flag, Bups, Saddle Bags, Speck, Stanley… Levi is a border collie and springer spaniel cross I suspect.  He was adopted by hubby at a Border Collie rescue in Southern California around six years ago.  He was the greeter of the facility and usually has a smile on his face for new people.  His flag… err… tail is his personality and when it became out of adjustment one time, we thought it was broke and would have to be docked.  Thank heavens after having a chiropractic adjustment, it slowly came back up to its usual happy self.  He does have a dark side though, especially around running kids who have no regard for his tail, and for small and large animals alike who think he might be something interesting to take a whiff of.

Oliver is the one with his foot on the ball daring me to kick it.  He is my first born, and was supposed to be full Boxer but his mama got out and had a date with some boy down the street.  We’re not exactly who but suspect it was a pit bull and lab cross named Jack.  Ollie will be 12 this coming September and is still as ornery, loud, playful, and adventurous as he ever was.  He was an outlaw in his younger years and loved to kill the neighbor’s chickens.  I almost had to escape to Canada with him in the trunk of my car, but thankfully he quit cold turkey… or chicken… whatever.  Anyway, he loves water, long walks through the pasture, killing ground squirrels, sleeping on the tile in the house, and licking his paws.  He is spoiled and will always be “Saint Oliver” in my eyes.

An Award

Well I certainly didn’t mean to put this off.  It definitely does not reflect my gratitude for the award by putting it off this long… The weeks just seem to get away from me and they’re getting faster the more mobile my daughter gets.  Yeah, we’ll blame it on her.  It’s the right thing to do.

But!  I was given an award over at Laughing Orca Ranch for the Arte y Pico award.  What an honor!  Thank you so much as you are too gracious with your description of my photos and silly little blog.  I am so glad that you are all enjoying it.  I had never imagined that my blog would get this big and that I’d have so many things to talk about but now when I’m out and about, it really captures my mind and my photos.  I am constantly shooting with this blog in mind.  I enjoy it really, it is a creative outlet and a place for me to post my pictures instead of having them sit on my hard drive wondering what I am going to do with them.  So thank you all for reading.

What a neat award the Arte y Pico award is.  Here is the descirption and rules:

The origin of the Arte y Pico Award: “This prize has arisen from the daily visits that I dedicate to many blogs which nourish me and enrich me with creativity. In them, I see dedication, creativity, care, comradeship, but mainly, ART, much art. I want to share this prize with all those bloggers that entertain me day to day and to share this prize with those who enrich me every day. Doubtlessly, there are many and it will be hard to pick just a few. The people I will name today deserve this prize, as do the very long serious list of bloggers I also enjoy to read. But I will name the first 10 and leave the rest of the work to all the bloggers that visit other’s blogs and are nourished by them.”“Arte Y Pico” blog so that everyone will know where the award came from.
5. Show these rules.

Here are the rules, if you decide to pass the award further to remarkable blogs in blogosphere worth to mention:

The rules:
1. You have to pick 5 blogs that you consider deserve this award through creativity, design, interesting material, and also contributes to the blogger community, no matter of language.
2. Each award should have the name of the author with a link to their blog.
3. Award winners have to post the award with the name and link to the blog of the person who gave them the award.
4. Please include a link to the

So here’s my awardees, or giftees, or… you get the idea.

Townie:  Townie has been with me since the beginning.  In fact, I believe she is the very first non-family member to comment on my blog.  Her blog is definitely a good visit though, providing much creativity.  She stamps her own cards, cooks, grows veggies, loves animals of all sorts, and provides an inside look to Scotland where she is from.  We also have a sisterhood through Land Rovers… speaking of which, I still have to post a photo.  Where does the time go!?

Under the Grow Light:  Netherfieldmom has some great inspiration for me.  She is a sister in Christ and takes raising her daughters, playing outside with the animals, being a stay-at-home-homeschooling-mom, very seriously and I thank her for the inspiration.  I am so glad that she found me as I feel like I’ve known her a long time, we have so much in common.  Too bad we don’t live closer.  I am blessed by her blog all the time.

Julie Thorson’s Horse Talk:  Every time I go to Julie’s blog I am inspired by her writing and devotion to the equine world.  I think that Julie’s writing is art, I have enjoyed it in my magazines before I entered the blogosphere, and now am happy to see that I can communicate with her through blogs.  She is a busy lady, lives in the country side of Idaho, is devoted to her horses and the Appaloosa breed, and grows an awesome garden with her miracle compost of equine leavings.

Hola Mole:  This is where I feed my cravings for Mexico.  I love Mexico, used to vacation there as a child, love the language, the people, the food, the atmosphere, the the the…. I could go on.  Molly has a gorgeous little horse that reminds me of my spoiled girl Annie Oakley and shows me the the life of living in a country I love.  Her photography is creative, her stories are always fun to read.

Kenleigh Acres:  Shannon has become a good “sheep friend” of mine.  Another lady I wish lived closer.  She is my help when I am in need of Jacob sheep advice.  She’s busy raising her son, tending her flock, and making super creative things out of their horns and wool.  She is also an expert herdswoman and uses her dogs to gather her sheep and attends competitions.  Shannon is also a fellow photographer and seems to be specializing in photos of dog competitions such as Lure Coursing with whippits.  Yes, she is a very well rounded person.

That’s my pick!  Happy blogging!

Independence Day Parade – with about 90 trillion photos

What kind of small town would we be if we didn’t have a Independence Day parade?  None at all, that’s what.  Every year rain or shine, we have a parade down main street of our local Big Town, not to be confused with the Big City

This year was a bit different though because I have a feeling we had someone famous there, but being that I live out in the sticks with no TV, I really have no clue who they are.  I just know they stuck out like sore thumbs.  I love it when people stick out like sore thumbs.  I am a people watcher from way back, andI was graced with these guy’s presence the whole parade because they sat directly accross the street from me.

Apparently they’re pretty cool because these girls couldn’t resist coming up to them and shaking their hands.  They bounced around, tossed their hair and were just as fun to watch as our Cool Dudes.

And it just wouldn’t be right to watch an Independence Day parade in California without smoke masks on.  Now I think these women went a little over the edge because it was a fairly clear day considering what we had been through.  At least no ash was falling!  But I can’t exactly judge their actions being that they might be out-of-towners and don’t know any better.

Then there’s the motorcycle with a side car and dogs in it, you have to have one of those!

Then you’ve got your flag wavers, my baby joined that group pretty quickly.  It kept her entertained and that was wonderful being the parade was held during her normal nap time.  Without that flag things could get a little dicey.

Looking down the street you see all the locals and touristas gathered and waiting… watching…

Will the parade ever start?  Thank goodness for mild weather and slight cool breezes.  Sometimes waiting for the parade to start can be a sweaty proposition.

Ooohhh, I’m a sucker for collies, especially smart ones my parents do NOT currently have a smart one.  Seems they’re a bit more rare these days.  I grew up with collies, the sable colored ones, and that is about the best dog you can have.  But unfortunately with all the breeding they’ve done, the breed is now a foo foo dog without a brain though you can spend big bucks for the original ranch style and that is a dog you wouldn’t mind spending the big bucks on.  They’re worth their weight in gold.

Oh goody, the color guard approacheth.

Our Superior Court Judge is on the far right and he has just become re-elected beating out a local boy who grew up here, went to highschool, left for college and came back as a lawyer.

The Grand Marshal of our parade is the neatest little guy you’ll ever meet.  Jim is a sweetie and he was born and raised in our county.  He always says, “Well hello little lady,” when he sees me.  I was thrilled to see him as our Grand Marshal.

Here he is receiving a plaque from the manager of our local bank.  I was best friends with Candy’s foster daughter from eighth grade up through about our sophomore year.  Candy was once a beauty queen in the seventies, I can see it, can’t you?

And what we have here is… well… don’t ask ’cause I don’t know.  But you’ve always got to have one of those don’t-ask-cause-I-don’t-know things in a small town parade.  It is essential.

And my favorite exhibit every year since it’s been restored.  An old stage that travelled through out county.  This stage was discovered just a few years back in a barn, dusty, worn but otherwise in fairly good condition.  It was the main transportation back in the 1800′s from our Big City to our Big Town and around from small town to small town throughout are county.

I adore the horses that pull it.  They are perfect and so powerful.  I bet their names are Ben and Gus or something like that.  It just seems to fit.

Another thing I love are the faces of people, such character.  This man’s face was wonderful, I love all the creases and lines.  His eyes seem to tell a story of guarding that stage through ambushes.

And what might have been a perfect picture was made even better by my mother’s beautiful donation of the top of her head.  Thanks mom.

And no small town parade would be a parade without a newly restored John Deere pulling a bunch of kids riding their smaller John Deeres.  Yep, if this exhibit wasn’t in the parade we would have had to cancel.

This girl is here to announce the arrival of the Chinese Dragons.  We have quite a bit of Chinese history from the 1800′s Gold Rush period and have the oldest Chinese Temple in the state here in this small town.  That’s right, we’re famous and we’re not affraid to show you just how it’s done.

She was pretty in to her job.

Next is the drums that the dragons move and dance to.

Move it you big hairy beast, you don’t scare me, I’m a black belt in something or another.  Better yet, I can shoot faster than you can run!

Oh good, that worked, I could have been devoured and not lived to tell this parade tale.

What else should you have in your parade if you were to plan one… Something that really makes a parade successful?

That’s right, old cars.  They’re always in parades.  If there’s a parade without old cars, then it just ain’t fittin’.  I really liked the two above.

Next you have kids riding decorated bikes.

You must have these.

If you don’t it’s like making chocolate chip cookies without the chocolate chips.  But these kids were riding for a cause, for blue skies and no more smoke.  Amen.

What the…?  Aaahhh, yes, if you have a local small town hospital you should not be surprised by what they come up with.  They’re always obsessed with areas of the body that you are not too interested in discussing.

This lady was good.  She bobbed, weaved, and soared.  Her sign had me a bit concerned though – I wonder what that kid in the green shirt is giggling about?  See him?  There on the left.

Goodness gracious!  Close your eyes!

Moving right along… Yep, bag pipers.  They were pretty good too.

I think their name was something like “Louie and His Lungs.”  Not really.  But they did win first in our marching bands which I think was a little bias being that this was the first bag pipers band we’ve had.

Next is our solo rider with appropriate decorations.  You cannot have a parade without one of these.  If you don’t have one, hire out.  This lady was great.  I think she was in her 80′s and had been a horsewoman all her life promoting safety and good horsemanship.

She had a beautiful steed too.

Next is the huey.  You must have a huey, if not, it’s like having a freezer without frost.

Next is the band that should have won but didn’t.  Our first really good marching band.  And they were good.  It also helps that I knew some of them.

This is Brittany.  I’m taking photos of her wedding next month.  Oh, I sure hope I do a good job, pray for me.  Her parents and us are pretty good friends.  In fact her mom is the lady who owns one of my foals, Zapata.  I took photos of her and him on solstice.

This is Brittany’s little brother Andrew.  He is very muscally talented and just learned the beat (or whatever) for the snare drum the 24 hours earlier.

This is Taylor, Brittany’s little sister, Andrew’s big sister.  She’s a middle child but oh so smart and a straight A student.  She also practiced her little brains out for being the lead snare in this marching band.  She did an awesome job… I think it’s the way she holds her tongue that helps.

Ratta tat tat, ratta tat tat.  Right about now is when I get reprimanded for jumping in front of another shooter.  I got so into taking photos that I stepped right in front of this lady and she yelled at me.  I felt pretty bad, but she had a pretty bad attitude must have been the smoke, she was also sitting stationary in her chair… “Get up woman and move around a bit!”  I thought.  But I apologized profusely instead of saying something sarcastic which never helps anything.

Yes, you spotted them.  The every cocky, ever smart mouthed Little League All Stars team.  I can say they’re cocky and smart mouthed because Hubby umpires for them and has a blast.

Next is our Back Coungry Horsemen reps.  They had a lovely display of equines and packing gear.  Our neck of the woods is big packing territory because of the beautiful mountains we live in.  Granite peaks with alpine lakes… It’s something for you to behold.

I think I heard this mule humming, “Staring at the south end of north bound cattle.  The devil made the horse that I ride…”  Name that song, if you listen to Micheal Martin Murphy.

This group was full of faces with character.

This little guy really had me.  He was so neat to watch and take pictures of.  His hat is absolutely perfect… A fit to the T.

And your parade wouldn’t be a parade without your local hot rod club.

I liked this car.

Here’s our local swim team.  They dropped their lane divider thingy they were holding and demonstrated the butterfly and breast stroke.

Of course you HAVE to have fire trucks!  I always appreciate them being at the end with all their lights and sirens.  Thankfully they keep them away from the horses.

Shewww!  I’m done.  Free access to my blog for a year if you can name who these characters are.

I hope your Independence Day was as fun as mine… Signing off for now.

One of my cards

In my “profile” I mention that I like to make cards.  Well, here’s an example.  It is the first I’ve done (that I like) without looking at someone else’s and copying every move they made.

I made it using various stamp sets from Stampin’ Up!, do not go there.  It’s highly addictive and will rob you blinde rendering your check book useless.  We have a local lady that is a “demonstrator” and I usually do not miss a Stampin’ Up! party, much to my husband’s disappointment.  But it does help my crafty side and is very satisfying.  I can now save money making cards that are super expensive fun and expressive, instead of buying the store bought .99 cent kind that are so impersonal (said with a deep amount of sarcasm).

Just another habit I thought you should know about me.

Happy Independence Day!

This day, Independence Day, always get me thinking of our founding fathers and their quest for Liberty.  They truly lived in a time of bravery, they loved God, served Him, fought for Independence and for our new country.  I am ever grateful to them for all they did for our freedom and for how they set up our country’s government.  I am just sad to see how our government has turned and is now doing what it thinks is best and paying no heed to the people.  I think our founding fathers would be saddened to see the state we’re in but none-the-less we are truly blessed and should be grateful to all those who have fought for our country and our freedom, because freedom isn’t free

I pledge allegiance to the flag, of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, One Nation under God, Indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for ALL.

Happy Independence Day!

Busy busy

All of a sudden today has come crashing down on me like a thunderstorm, except thankfully without the lightning.  We’ve got enough fires around here… But I’m off to the Big City for a baby shower / surprise birthday party and with all sorts of photos of different content that I’ve snapped over the past five or so days, it’s frusterating not being able to put them together and show you what’s been going on!  So, I’ll leave you with this little bit of progress.

Watch out world, she’s on her way!

In the mean time, watch for upcoming posts of happy cows come from California, causes for our smoke, the aliens have landed and a sweet pea of a baby.  Sheewwweee I’ve gotta get crackin’.

Signing of until next time…
