Tangle Blue Lake

Posted in Family, Nature with tags , on September 1, 2009 by mudranch

Last Saturday we headed back up to the Wilderness Area and visited Tangle Blue Lake.  We had thought it was going to be a mile and a half long walk in but our very out dated book had us driving closer where there is now a new gate further down the road — we ended up walking 3.5 miles one way instead.

082909_4992

That really wasn’t a problem for Simon and I as we had Annie in a backpack most the time but we had brought along our friends with their four girls from 8 down to a year and a half, and they got very tired.

082909_4996

Hubby and I were noticing all sorts of tracks and “sign” as we walked in the trail, this one really caught our eye though as it was so large!  What on earth could it be… then we found a big sloppy pile… cows.

082909_4997

Being the strange farm girl that I am, I got really excited about the prospect of seeing a herd of cattle grazing in an alpine meadow.  I started hoofing it and was leading the pack by quite a ways.  I heard the cattle lowing in the distance and the “sign” kept getting fresher – I knew I was gaining on them.

082909_5008

We had many creek crossings and water crossings to go through (very normal for our alps) so I was thankful for wearing my Chaco sandals.  They served me well, and I enjoy walking through the fresh streams anyway.

082909_5010

There were a few blooms along the way, not a whole lot, but enough to really catch your eye.  These little blossoms were about the size of a dime — not very big.

082909_5012

The Cedar trees in one area were quite large.  I am always impressed with the really big Cedars as they are fairly rare down in the valley where I live.  They’re so beautiful and majestic, I always enjoy them and the large Sugar Pines as well.

082909_5022

We popped out in this little meadow and I could hear the cowboy’s calls to teh cattle then, and knew they were right up in the trees, just out of sight.  Unfortunately, they were headed the wrong direction so I wouldn’t be seeing them up at the lake we were destined for.  Oh well, maybe another time.  I would be thrilled to find them again, up at a high lake in the middle of a wilderness.

082909_5028

We arrived at our destination, three hours later, to Tangle Blue Lake.  It was pristine, surrounded on the south and west sides by the large granite mountain.

Hubby told me of his story when he was on the county Search and Rescue team of rescuing a young man who had gotten “high” then rock climbed up the granite face you see there toward the top, he had fallen then broken his back.  Hubby slept slumped in his sleeping bag over a small tree coming out of a rock out cropping and waited for the helicopter at first light to come and air lift the man out.  Craziness…

082909_5036

We both set out to fish with our poles and after about 6 casts I brought in this trout.  He was beautiful, gorgeous colors, and a nice size!  I was more than pleased that he’d decided to bite my lure.  We turned him back but I told Hubby that if we were backpacking, he’d be wrapped in foil with some garlic and put on the fire!

082909_5043

My poor old boy, Oliver, came with us.  He’ll be 13 on Sunday the 6th, and used to do these trips with us all the time.  He used to see us get his doggy pack out and would bark in excitement.  This time he didn’t carry a pack but was exhausted by the time we got to the lake.  He slept hard in the shade but I know he enjoyed every moment of our hike.  He lives for these outtings and I’m glad we could take him on another, before he leaves this world.

082909_5045

Before long, it was time to head back down the mountain.  We weren’t able to stay too long because of how long it had taken us to get up there.  Annie insisted on walking down for about a mile until we made her get in the pack — she was pretty tired and in desperate need of a nap (which she hadn’t taken all day…)  She is quite a little trooper and is definitely a “do it yourselfer.”

082909_5047

She would refuse Hubby’s hand when he’d hold it out during slippery spots, then every now and then he’d grab her hand because he knew it was going to be too hard for her and after he did, she started leaping off rocks.  She was so funny, refuse a hand, then when she has one she turns in to super woman!

082909_5054

Not long after we made her go in the pack did she konk out.  She was very tired, and I was very thankful she had her Bubby along so she could rest her head on him.  Look at that face… dirty girl, good thing I brought a change of clothes.

082909_5055

After about 20 minutes of snoring, Hubby re-positioned her foot and her head popped up.  The eyes were open but I can’t say she was registering anything.  It wasn’t long until she was fully charged again and ready to go… this girl has a lot of energy, just like her Daddy.

082909_5053

We found another one, a tree growing inside a tree – only this time the stump is very old and very large with a good sized baby Cedar growing right out of the middle.

082909_5057

Lots of thistle blooming down lower in the altitude — you know, my horses eat those purple blossoms.  It always amazes me when I see them curl back their lips and bite one off, never touching those spines.  I thought this one seeding out was pretty, though I’m not a big fan of thistles.  We call them “bad guys” around here.

And a panorama I pieced together from a bunch of continuous photos… we had a great time!  We hope to go back again soon.

Mountain Meadow

Posted in Family, Nature on August 24, 2009 by mudranch

Hubby, Annie and I took a drive up to a favorite spot in our favorite wilderness area, Mountain Meadow.  It is about a 40 minute drive to a town north of us then another 40 minute drive on a very bouncy dirt road up in to the wilderness area.

082309_4818

The drive is gorgeous, lush forests with granite boulders and clear, cool streams winding down the canyon.  I am constantly keeping my eyes peeled for wild life though only saw some deer.

082309_4819

There are a lot of trail heads that start off from the road and we saw quite a few trucks with large stock trailers for packing companies.  We have quite a few packing companies around here, with horses and mule strings to carry in your equipment for hunters or just people who want to take in the sites on horseback.

082309_4822

Up at Mountain Meadow there is a resort (small) and a few houses.  Hubby and I like to imagine ourselves living up there, with solar energy and self-sustaining.  Keep in mind, though there are buildings is really is up in the middle of nowhere with private property surrounded by wilderness.  It is so peaceful and so neat.

082309_4827

Our destination was at the campground where we want to go camp someday soon (hopefully!)  The campground is actually situated in the county to the north of us and the really neat part about it is, the only vehicle access to this spot of the county is through the one we live in.  It is a very remote spot.  I am excited about these corrals that are available to the public right on the edge of a meadow tucked in the fir trees.  They were constructed and donated by the Back Country Horsemen.

082309_4831

Right next to the Public Corrals is a beautiful open meadow, conveniently fenced with some nice grasses.  Unfortunately for the public, there’s also this sign on the corner tree next to the gate.  I got a kick out of the sign, for some reason.

082309_4832

Here is the “Not Public Pasture” with the small cottage over looking it.  Hubby and I felt quite a bit of jealousy when we saw this.

082309_4839

At first we headed down a little path between two fences, a public access to the trails.  We were searching for a spot to go fishing, and the river was down the bank to the left.  We thought we could find a spot by going this way.

082309_4835

One of the springs had carved it’s way over and through this granite rock.  This is one of the many water sources that kept the meadow fairly green.

082309_4841

There were multiple wild flowers to be found, as you all well know by now, this is a favorite subject of mine.  I believe this is a wild aster of some sort.

082309_4843

Annie also had a lot of fun picking the wildflowers, thankfully she picked on the daisies as they were very abundant.

082309_4853

082309_4852

A big favorite of mine is the groves of aspen trees.  I would imagine they’ll be changing color this next month and will go from vibrant spring green to a golden yellow.  I adore these trees!

082309_4857

Once we got to the end of that meadow, we had to turn around and head back as there wasn’t an easy access to the water for fishing.  If it was just Hubby and I, it wouldn’t be that difficult, but dragging our daughter along is another story.  We have more important things to think about now.

082309_4862

We tried heading down another trail that actually ended up being a game trail because the willows at the bottom of the hillside meadow were more than thick.  Back up we went.

082309_4864

We headed back to the trail head we personally knew and continued to the river there.  We had to ford it before when we would do a 30 mile backpacking adventure.

082309_4868

We had taken the Caribou Lakes trail a couple times before which was more than fun — we both have very fond memories of our packing adventures going that direction, but this time we wandered up stream to hunt for small fish.

082309_4873

It doesn’t look like a whole lot of water here, and if I remember right, when we had to pick out way across it in our hiking boots there was a lot more and it was quite a bit deeper.  But, this was just enough water to have fun fishing.  The trick about this type of fishing is that you have to be very sneaky, the fish spook very easily.

082309_4874

Levi, enjoying the cool water.

Here’s a funny picture for you.  The water is so clear, and the angle so fun that it looks like it shrunk my dog and turned him in to a corgi.  Our dogs had a blast wading in the water, but perhaps a little too much fun.  They kept wanting to go ahead of us and Oliver, being deaf, couldn’t hear us yelling at him to stay out while we fished.  They were more than welcome to wade behind us where we had already fished, but they did go ahead a few times to spoil our fishing in some holes.

082309_4876

Here is one of two fish we actually brought in.  They are gorgeous and very small but a lot of fun to catch because of the challenge.  Of course, they were released back into the stream.  We would have had a lot more success if we had 4 pound test on our poles rather than 6 and 8 (the heavier the test poundage, the thicker the line and the easier for the fish to see.)

082309_4883

Annie really enjoyed wading in the water and throwing rocks in.  We would tell her to move up stream as we slowly walked, casting as we went.  She would be content sitting in one spot so would ask, “Why?!”  We’d have to go and grab her hand to lead her to the next spot.

082309_4890

She eventually got a bit tired so sat in the backpack for a while to take a rest.  I had thought she would take a small siesta but she actually kept herself awake and alert.  After a bit she wanted down so she could resume throwing rocks and picking daisies.

082309_4889

Here’s an interesting rock that Hubby found as he hiked up the water.

082309_4892

This was a favorite hole for both of us, it was a bend in the stream and we stood on the shore casting in around the boulders.  The fish, surprisingly kept chasing our lures though we kept casting.  Most of the time you have two casts in to one hole and they’re done with you, this hole they were extra curious.

One of many butterflies we came across — and here I thought this would be the only one, until I found a very big bull thistle that was covered in them.

082309_4919

We were going to head back down the stream and fish as we went back but decided to take the wooded trail along side instead.  Annie was about done and needed a nap so we decided to get to the truck a bit quicker than we planned.

This is one of my favorite shots of the day — the butterflies in the wilderness were less bashful than the ones at my home!

Our future camp site.

I have more for tomorrow, but I think I’ll stop here since this post already has 30+ pictures!  I have a lot of pictures of the little things that caught my eye and of Simon’s other fishing spot he got to enjoy while Annie slept.

Annie wants you to know, before I finish, that Bubby made the trip with us and enjoyed his view from the top of the pack.

Unwelcome Visitors

Posted in Nature with tags on July 18, 2009 by mudranch

Abby woke us up this morning having an absolute hissy-fit.  She was barking in a hysterical bark one that was very un-like her “coyote bark” so we were wondering what she was up to, but kind of unconcerned.  Hubby got up before I did (normal) and looked out the window, “She’s just barking in all directions.”

“Humm,”  I replied (normal for that early — 5:30am).  Finally he got a shower and headed out in the truck but I heard him stop and praise Abby.  So I decided I had better get up and check it out.  Hubby was staring up in to a small oak tree as I headed out and I asked him what it was, his reply, “The cutest thing you ever saw.”

071809_3433

This is what I saw when I got there.

071809_3436

This is what I saw when someone had enough curiosity to look down.

071809_3437

You can learn quite a bit from raccoons — just because you’re cute, doesn’t mean people want you around, especially if your destructive (physically and mentally.)

071809_3445

071809_3447

And don’t bring the family — ’cause they’re most likely just as destructive as you!

Sorry Lana, no pictures of Abby this time but I’ve got you in mind!

Sunday Stills — Flowers & Plants; Lupine

Posted in Annie, Nature, Nature Photography, Photography, Sunday Stills with tags , on May 2, 2009 by mudranch

For this week’s challenge over at Sunday Stills, Ed gave us yet another subject that I love — Flowers & Plants.

050109_0903

I have a favorite patch of Lupine that grows near by at our local lake.  I found the patch last May and went to check and see if the flowers were blooming yet, especially with all the hot weather we’d been having the week before.

050109_0888

Fortunately for us here in Northern California, we’ve been getting some rain and it let up enough for me to take photos of my patch of lupine leaving beautiful little diamonds on their leaves.

050109_0900

Though my patch isn’t quite in full bloom yet, I plan to go back for more photos this coming week hopefully in the morning when the light starts to filter through the trees.

050109_0908

Taking my daughter with me to look at the pretty flowers is always fun as everything is so new in her eyes.  Of course, like any little girl, she wants to pick them too…

050109_0904

It is a flower’s fate, to be grasped by a little girl’s hands.

050109_0887

Isn’t it interesting how we can get so bored with life and the things that are made by human hands but we never tire of seeing another sunset, sunrise, spring, or fall?

050109_0939

I really don’t believe that’s by chance.

Enjoy your Sunday!
